How the California Mental Health System Works (FAQ)

Why does California use 988 instead of a state-specific number?

California uses the national 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline as its front door, routing calls to one of 13 regional crisis call centers based on the caller’s area code. If a local center can’t take the call, it’s automatically routed to a national backup center. The state is also mid-way through a five-year plan (through 2030) to better coordinate 988, 911, and county behavioral health crisis services statewide, so some regional differences still exist.

Can I call my county crisis line if I don’t have insurance?

Yes. County behavioral health crisis lines generally serve residents regardless of insurance status or ability to pay, and can connect you to sliding-scale or no-cost care.

How do I find the crisis line for a California county not listed here?

Call or text 988, since it will route you to your regional center automatically, or check your county’s public health or behavioral health department website directly, since county lines and hours can change.
