Extraversion is the personality trait that describes how much a person draws energy from engagement with the external world and seeks out activity, reward and stimulation. It is one of the Big Five personality traits, alongside openness to experience, conscientiousness, agreeableness and neuroticism.
It is the one traid that is often misunderstood by people although they think they understand it well.
Let’s start with a definition.
Extraversion represents the tendency of someone to be sociable, assertive, energetic, and drawn toward positive emotion and external stimulation, rather than toward solitude and quiet.
People who score high on extraversion are talkative, socially confident, physically energetic and quick to experience positive emotion. People who score low, that is introverts, are reserved, independent and comfortable alone. They are not necessarily unfriendly or antisocial. They simply require less external stimulation to feel satisfied.

The Six Facets of Extraversion
Like the other Big Five domains, extraversion in the NEO-PI-R model is divided into six facets. What is notable about extraversion’s facets is that they split cleanly into two groups: an affiliative, warm cluster and an agentic, energetic one. Keep that division in mind, because it becomes important later.
1. Warmth
Warmth describes affection and friendliness toward others. High scorers genuinely like people, form attachments easily, and are demonstrative about it. This is the facet that sits closest to agreeableness, and the two overlap. But warmth is about the ease and speed of forming close bonds, while agreeableness is about concern for others’ interests.
Low scorers are formal and reserved in manner. This does not mean they are cold or hostile. They simply keep more distance, particularly early in a relationship.
2. Gregariousness
Gregariousness is the preference for other people’s company, the desire to be in crowds, at gatherings, surrounded by others. This is the facet most people mistake for the whole trait.
Low scorers actively prefer solitude and often find large groups draining rather than energising. Note that someone can score high on Warmth and low on Gregariousness: deeply affectionate with a small circle, and uninterested in parties.
3. Assertiveness
Assertiveness describes social dominance, forcefulness and a tendency to take charge. High scorers speak up in groups, lead without being asked, and are comfortable being the centre of attention.
Low scorers prefer to keep in the background and let others do the talking. This facet has the strongest links to leadership emergence and to workplace outcomes of any part of the trait.
4. Activity
Activity is about pace and energy, a preference for keeping busy, moving quickly and doing a great deal. High scorers lead fast-paced, vigorous lives and report feeling restless when unoccupied.
Low scorers are more leisurely and relaxed in tempo. Again, this is not laziness. It is a preference for a slower pace.
5. Excitement-Seeking
This facet captures a craving for stimulation: bright environments, loud noise, risk, novelty and thrill. High scorers are drawn to activities others would find alarming.
Low scorers feel little need for such stimulation and prefer calm environments. This facet has the strongest overlap with sensation-seeking and, at the extreme, with risk-taking behaviour.
6. Positive Emotions
Positive Emotions describes the tendency to experience joy, happiness, excitement and optimism. High scorers laugh easily and often, and report frequent good moods.
This is arguably the most important facet in the whole domain, and the least intuitive. It is also the reason extraversion turns out to be the Big Five trait most strongly associated with happiness, a finding we return to below.
Low scorers are not unhappy or depressed. Low Positive Emotions means positive affect is experienced less frequently or less intensely. It is not the same as distress, which belongs to neuroticism.

What Introversion Is Not
Before looking at causes, it is worth clearing away three persistent confusions. These matter clinically, not just terminologically.
Introversion is not shyness. Shyness is discomfort or anxiety in social situations. Introversion is a lower preference for them. A shy person may badly want company and feel unable to pursue it. An introvert may be perfectly capable socially and simply choose less of it. Shyness sits closer to neuroticism than to low extraversion.
Introversion is not social anxiety disorder. This follows from the above but deserves stating separately. Social anxiety disorder is a diagnosable condition involving marked fear of scrutiny and avoidance that causes real impairment. Low extraversion is a normal personality variant that impairs nothing. Confusing the two leads people either to pathologise an ordinary trait or to dismiss a treatable condition as “just my personality”.
Introversion is not simply being drained by people. The popular “social battery” model, in which extraverts recharge around others and introverts recharge alone, is intuitive and widely repeated, but the empirical support for it is weaker than most people assume. What the research more consistently shows is a difference in reward sensitivity, not in energy depletion.
There is also the question of the ambivert. The term describes someone near the middle of the distribution, and since extraversion is normally distributed, that is where most people actually are. It is a useful everyday word, but it is not a third personality type. It is simply the middle of a continuum.
The Arousal Debate: Eysenck and What Came After
Extraversion has the longest-running biological theory of any Big Five trait, and understanding how it has changed explains a great deal about the modern research.
Eysenck’s arousal theory (1967) proposed that introverts have a higher baseline level of cortical arousal than extraverts. On this account, extraverts seek stimulation because they are chronically under-aroused and need input to reach a comfortable level, while introverts avoid it because they are already close to their optimum. It is an elegant theory, it explains a lot of everyday observation, and it dominated the field for decades.
It has not held up as cleanly as its elegance suggests. Matthews and Gilliland’s (1999) review of the accumulated evidence found the picture considerably more complicated than the original theory predicted, with results depending heavily on time of day, task and the specific measure of arousal used.
The reward sensitivity account has largely replaced it. Depue and Collins (1999) argued that extraversion reflects individual differences in the brain’s dopaminergic reward system. Extraverts respond more strongly to cues signalling reward, and this shows up as sociability, assertiveness, energy and positive emotion.
This shift matters for how you read the trait. Under Eysenck, extraversion is about tolerating stimulation. Under the reward account, it is about how strongly good things register, which explains the Positive Emotions facet far better, and explains why extraversion predicts happiness.
What Causes Extraversion?
Genetics
Twin studies consistently place extraversion among the more heritable Big Five traits. Jang, Livesley and Vernon (1996) estimated heritability at around 53% for extraversion, with the remainder attributed largely to non-shared environment. As with the other traits, shared family environment contributes remarkably little. Siblings raised in the same household are not much more similar in extraversion than their genetic relatedness alone would predict.
Dopamine and reward circuitry
Following Depue and Collins, the dominant biological account locates extraversion in the mesolimbic dopamine system. Individuals with more reactive reward circuitry find social contact, achievement and novelty more intrinsically rewarding, and organise their behaviour around pursuing them.
Two aspects: Enthusiasm and Assertiveness
DeYoung, Quilty and Peterson (2007) found that extraversion, like every Big Five domain, divides into two intermediate aspects: Enthusiasm (the affiliative, warm, positive-emotion side, drawing on Warmth, Gregariousness and Positive Emotions) and Assertiveness (the agentic, dominant, energetic side, drawing on Assertiveness and Activity).
This is the same division noted in the facets above, and it resolves a lot of apparent contradictions. The warm, enthusiastic, non-dominant person and the forceful, driven, socially cool person are both extraverted, in different ways. Leadership research tends to track the Assertiveness aspect. Happiness research tends to track Enthusiasm.
Environment and culture
Environmental contributions appear to operate mainly through non-shared experience rather than through parenting style. Cultural context shapes how the trait is expressed and valued rather than its underlying level, a point worth keeping in mind given how strongly Western professional norms reward extraverted behaviour.
Interesting Facts About Extraversion
- Extraversion is the strongest Big Five predictor of subjective well-being and positive affect, more so than income, education or most demographic variables. Steel, Schmidt and Shultz’s (2008) meta-analysis found personality accounted for substantially more variance in well-being than had previously been assumed.
- Acting extraverted makes introverts feel better too. Fleeson, Malanos and Achille (2002) found that when people behaved in an extraverted way, they reported higher positive affect, and this held regardless of their trait level. Introverts benefited as much as extraverts.
- Extraversion is the strongest Big Five predictor of leadership emergence (Judge, Bono, Ilies & Gerhardt, 2002), meaning who becomes a leader, which is not the same as who leads effectively.
- Ambiverts may outsell both extremes. Grant (2013) found that sales performance peaked among people in the middle of the extraversion distribution rather than at the high end, contradicting a long-standing assumption in sales hiring.
- Extraversion declines modestly with age, though the two aspects diverge: social vitality tends to decline while social dominance rises through young adulthood (Roberts, Walton & Viechtbauer, 2006).
How to Assess Extraversion
1. NEO Personality Inventory-Revised (NEO-PI-R)
The standard for facet-level measurement, reporting all six facets separately. Given how differently the affiliative and agentic facets behave, the facet profile is more informative here than the domain score alone.
2. Big Five Inventory-2 (BFI-2)
Soto and John’s (2017) revision breaks extraversion into three facets: Sociability, Assertiveness and Energy Level. This maps closely onto the aspects distinction discussed above. At 60 items it is considerably shorter than the NEO-PI-R.
3. Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Revised (EPQ-R)
Of historical and continuing importance, since Eysenck’s model is where the modern construct originates. Worth noting that Eysenck’s extraversion scale is not identical to the FFM version. It incorporates impulsivity content that the Big Five assigns elsewhere, so scores are not directly interchangeable.
4. International Personality Item Pool (IPIP-NEO)
A public-domain item pool correlating highly with the commercial NEO-PI-R, available in versions from roughly 20 to 300 items. It underpins most free online Big Five tests, including the assessment on this site.
5. HEXACO-PI-R
The HEXACO model’s eXtraversion factor is broadly similar to the FFM version but includes more content relating to social self-esteem. If you are comparing findings across models, do not assume the two scales are interchangeable.
Prevalence and Cross-Cultural Patterns
Extraversion has been measured across a wider range of cultures than most personality traits, and it emerges consistently as a recognisable dimension. Lucas and colleagues (2000) examined its structure across nations and found the reward-sensitivity core to be consistent, supporting the view that the trait is not a Western artefact.
Mean-level comparisons are a different matter, and considerably more contested. Schmitt, Allik, McCrae and Benet-Martínez (2007), surveying over 17,000 people across 56 nations, reported broad regional patterns, but these should be read with caution.

One further caution specific to extraversion: cultures differ in how much they value extraverted behaviour, and self-report items ask people to compare themselves against local norms. This makes mean-level comparison particularly slippery for this trait.
